Acupuncture Studio

In our clinic we use recliners in our quiet, lovely common room. The environment is peaceful and comforting. Treating patients in an open setting has many benefits: it's easy for friends and family members to come in for treatment together; people enjoy feeling part of a community; patients have more control over their treatments; and costs are lower. Originally developed by Working Class Acupuncture in Portland, Oregon, community acupuncture is catching on nationwide as a way to receive high-quality, affordable healthcare without you having to rely on insurance companies.

Many Western acupuncturists treat patients on tables in individual rooms. This is not traditional in Asia, where acupuncture usually occurs in a community setting. Community acupuncture clinics represent a return to tradition. Community acupuncturists focus on using “distal” points (below the knee and elbow, and on the head and neck) so patients can remain fully clothed during treatment. Community acupuncture clinics often use recliners rather than treatment tables. Many patients prefer a community setting because they find it more relaxing.

Private acupuncture in the U.S. costs between $60 and $200 per treatment. Acupuncturists tend to spend a long time talking with each patient, going over medical records and asking many questions. We don't. The only way that we at BCA can make acupuncture affordable and still make a living ourselves is to streamline our treatments and see multiple patients in an hour, so we have returned to the traditional approach. On your first visit we will ask you some questions and go over your health questionnaire, but on subsequent visits we will just get a brief update and then use tongue and pulse diagnosis to decide how to treat you. We do not provide primary care medicine; acupuncture is a wonderful complement to Western medicine but is not a substitute for it.

ACUPUNCTURISTS

Nicole Murray, L.Ac., MSTOM, is BCA's owner. She specializes in treatment of pain, stress reduction, women's health, and general balancing and wellness.

Nicole has a master's in traditional oriental medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and is licensed by the California Acupuncture Board. She has specialized training in Japanese-style meridian acupuncture, pediatrics, and orthopedics. She completed clinical rotations in a general medicine clinic, UCSD Sports Training Center, Rady Children's Hospital, and the UCSD Free Clinic Project.

Nicole strongly believes that stress plays a powerful role in health, and places a special focus on stress reduction with all of her patients, regardless of condition—whether they are sick, in pain, or working to improve overall wellness. Before studying Chinese Medicine, she worked in nonprofit management, fundraising, and program management. She lives with her family in Ocean Beach, is a busy mom of two young kids, and loves yoga, swimming, travel, and reading.

Josephine Salman, L.Ac, MSTOM, helps patients live happier and healthier lives. Josephine began her career in healthcare as a consultant in health adminstration departments in the long term care setting  for Geriatric and psychiatric facilities in Chicago. Josephine furthered her career as Director in various acute care settings.

Her journey to vibrant health lead her to the prestigious Pacific college in San Diego. She has completed clinical rotations at the UCSD free clinic project and general medicine clinics. She sucessfully treats genitourinary disorder in both men and women, menopausal symptoms, infertility, menstrual irregularities, allergies, digestive disorders, addictions and a vast array of pain. She has specialized training in orthopedics and Japanese-style meridian therapy.

According to Josephine, "Acupuncture is a preventive medicine and an illness is not needed to invest in your health."

Mary Vincent, L.Ac. MSTOM, began studying the human body while earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Mexico in 2000. She became specifically interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine after observing an acupuncturist guest speaker in an anthropology class. As someone who had been enduring back pain without successful treatment, she was personally interested in whether acupuncture could help her condition. After a few acupuncture treatments, she discovered first hand a treatment modality that diminished her back pain which significantly improved her overall well being.

Upon receiving her Bachelor’s degree, she moved to San Diego to pursue her growing love of Chinese Medicine, receiving her Master’s degree from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. She completed clinical rotations at Pacific’s clinic and Rady Children’s Hospital. She has a specialized interest in treating anxiety, women’s health issues, and the side effects of chemotherapy.

Miriam Gilson, L.Ac., MSTOM, holds a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. With a background in athletics and personal training, Miriam brings her knowledge of kinesthesiology and sports injury into her practice as an acupuncturist.

A passion to bring Oriental Medicine to different walks of life has brought Miriam to work abroad in Scotland, Laos and Guatemala.  Miriam also enjoys volunteering with non-profits to bring community acupuncture to undeserved populations of San Diego.

Practicing acupuncture has been a dream come true and Miriam looks forward to a long, rewarding career of bringing its benefits to many more people in need of her service.
